Duck and Pigeon met at the usual pond near the river. They were best friends.
1
It was a very hot day.
-
Duck dived into the water. Pigeon thought, “It must be nice to swim.”
-
After dipping his head under water, Duck said, “Would you like to swim? Get on my back and I’ll teach you.”
2
Each time Duck tried to go under the water with Pigeon on his back, Pigeon flew up.
-
Pigeon thought sadly, “I will never be able to swim like Duck.”
-
Duck was left on his own in the water.
3
“What’s the matter Pigeon? You disappoint. How can you leave me on my own in the water?” complained Duck.
-
Pigeon replied, “I am afraid of drowning.”
-
“I thought you wanted to learn to swim just like me,” said Duck.
4
“Tweet! Tweet! Tweet! Duck, let me teach you to fly instead. Swimming is too difficult!”
-
Pigeon went up to a large rock. Duck followed.
-
The next moment, Pigeon was up on a tall tree. Duck could not follow.
5
Duck felt sad. He thought to himself angrily, “Pigeon is so inconsiderate. I am a duck not a pigeon. I’m used to swimming not flying.”
-
Pigeon wanted to comfort her friend.
6
They sat down on a rock in silence.
-
Finally, Pigeon said, “My friend, today I learned that I will never swim like you. And you will never fly like me. I fly and you swim.”
-
They embraced warmly.
7
“We are ducks, when we swim, we dip our heads saying, ‘Kwaa kwaa kwaa gxadada! Kwaa kwa kwa gxadada!’”
-
“We are birds, when we fly, we flutter our wings saying, ‘Tsiyo, tsiyo, tsiyo!’”
